From the Artist

“Photography is about writing with light, isn’t it? My photography depicts the complexities of life. In every picture, so elementary and obvious in appearance, the intricacies of our planet are unveiled. Even if  it looks harder and harder to live with those layers of complexity, I want to surpass the overwhelming depression and keep the over massing beauty.”

About the Artist

Cedric studied Architecture and Photography in Belgium at Liege University and Liege Art Academy, but notes the most genuine lessons came from photographers Andreas Bitesnich and David Alan Harvey workshops in Turin. He has professionally exhibited his work in group and solo exhibitions both abroad and in the US. In 2019, he released his first photography book titled, “Terre de chiens.” Cedric is currently living and working in Louisville, Kentucky.

Vibrant Journey Around My World is on view at Capacity Contemporary from October 12th-November 10th, 2024 and showcases selections from the artist’s “How I Picture The Music”, “Enjoy”, and “Stained Glass Window” series.

How I Picture The Music Series

From the Artist

How I Picture the Music is a coming together of artists. On the one hand, the photographer and his images, and on the other, the artists of his musical journey through life.

Music has accompanied me daily since my teenage years, and along with it an entire visual universe. From CD covers, to videoclips to shows and concerts. My experience of music is above all one of friendship, tapes passed around, concerts experienced together, energy coursing through our veins after blasting our eardrums.

Thanks to a move from my native Belgium to the States, I have re-immersed myself in thirty years of musical appreciation. Around fifty favorite songs have emerged; those that I’ve listened to thousands of times, and that I still play today with a great deal of pleasure.

Having established my playlist, I then delved into the past 20 years of my photography and let the magic do its work. For each song title an image that I could imagine as an album cover sprang to mind, imposing itself as a personal visual representation.

HOW I PICTURE THE MUSIC is also a self-published book. Because my passion for (nice) art books is equall to my dedication for photography, I wanted to be part of the "book construction.” This book is à la française format (17 x 24 cm) with Swiss binding, so it can perfectly fit comfortably in hands. In addition to the white pages, I inserted a black page booklet at the beginning and end to create a breath before diving into the music/picture experience.128 pages and a print run of 300 copies, each signed and numbered in a bilingual French/English edition.

Stained Glass Window Series

series of seven photographic images. Each image shot from Canterbury Cathedral in the United Kingdom and is individually framed.

Enjoy Series

This ambition aims to approach street photography from a new and unique perspective by using a dynamic sense of contrast and bright highlights to reveal and conceal different aspects of each image. The use of vibrant colors and negative space encourages the audience to focus on the intricate formal relationships taking place within the imagery. Some long exposures are used for transforming the reality. In this way, some familiar scenes move on to more abstract compositions that consist of lines, shapes, and colors. In others, the images challenge the way the audience traditionally views the human form. The project is poetic and sentimental and expresses the desire to unveil the ephemeral nature of the human existence. The meaning behind the aesthetic of this series of photographs is the fundamental question: what am I looking for in order to feel at peace and to enjoy the existence? The series was built between 2008 and 2017. Most of the photographs were taken in South America, where the concepts of colors, movements and music are flamboyant. The Enjoy series consists of 18 photographs and had a first solo show in 2018 (ABC&Design Gallery, Verviers, Belgium) and a group show in 2017 (Maastricht, The Netherlands).
