From the Artist
The making of this work over the past three years was first inspired by the beauty and sanctuary of the woods surrounding my home. I find wild roses and trout lilies. Snakeskins. I study the patterns of an Eastern Box Turtle- a Native American symbol for planet Earth, and a personification of goddess energy.
The birch panels offer their comforting ‘figures’ as places to begin my mantra of beads and silver point marks, layers of paint. My shaped letterpress poem “Surface Review” offers another surface to mine. Slowly, landscapes and characters present themselves. I keep learning to trust some intuitive language that guides mark making- that place where image and text meet. And a story unfolds.
