Fruit of the Womb/Skin of the Fruit is series of paintings by New York based artist, AnnCharlotte Tavolacci that represents the growth of her daughter, a rainbow baby, through pregnancy.

AnnCharlotte was initially inspired by an encounter with a hummingbird while living in Brooklyn. In such an urban environment, she thought the circumstance to be uncanny and started to research the hummingbird and became immediately inspired with the actual species as well as the symbolic values of the creature.

While her baby was in utero, fruit was depicted as a visual metaphor of size, alongside the hummingbird/s, to represent her baby's irrepressible weekly survival. Inspired by idealism, AnnCharlotte would also incorporate objects that symbolically represented her and the father's love bond. Using repetition, the artist would design the object, fruit and hummingbird stencils out of Bristol paper, tracing and overlapping the shapes, changing forms at the intersections.

AnnCharlotte Tavolacci, a NYC School of Visual Arts (BFA) and LIU
University (MA) alumna, resides in eastern Long Island farm country, with
her husband, four year old daughter, and two cats, where she works as a
Fine Artist, Art Therapist in private practice, and Graduate Professor.

AnnCharlotte has had several solo gallery exhibitions displaying her
personal confessional fine art around the United States. She has
completed various Artist Residencies, most recently an international
residency in Nova Scotia.

Prior to opening her private practice, AnnCharlotte was the Fine Art
Activist, Educational and Therapeutic Specialist at a government
non-profit, serving homeless and mentally ill residents of NYC. As a
graduate professor at various NYC and LI institutions, she teaches
courses, blending fine arts with psychology and arts community social
action. She has nationally presented lectures through universities,
galleries, museums and various institutions, on her personal fine art and
therapeutic arts/outreach as well.

In this current series in progress, often, I am the canvas. I am exploring my identity and her many layers. Throughout this journey I try to take courage and comfort in this creative space and evolve. Creating art for me, is an internal cycle of destruction and recreation. This series has a blend of formal painting in a self portrait nature on canvas, large scale Indian ink renderings on water color paper,  as well as experimental skin art and body painting.

I have those close to me, paint me, revealing the inside of the mask.

Recently, I started to paint my own skin, and my daughter’s skin. Using a sketchbook from a previous identity, prior to motherhood, I found inspiration in my alter ego creature sketches. I find using this content and inspiration on our skin is a means to blend and merry these fantastical layers, into one beautiful existence. Bonding not only, my relationship and infinite love for my daughter, but with myself and my many layers.
